The album 'On Salisbury Plain' is a collection of 16 piano works depicting the landscapes of the largest remaining area of chalk grassland in north-west Europe.
Salisbury Plain is contained within the county of Wiltshire in the south-west of England, and covers an area of approximately 300 square miles. It is sparsely populated, and is best known for the prehistoric monument 'Stonehenge'.
Large parts of the Plain are used by the military as a training area, and have therefore escaped the intensification of agriculture which has re-shaped the countryside elsewhere. In 1943 the village 'Imber' was evacuated for military exercises, and has remained closed ever since. As the military own over half of the area of the Plain and large areas are permanently closed to the public, it has become a haven for wildlife. The beautiful river Avon runs through the eastern half of the Plain.
Writers, poets and painters like William Wordsworth, Thomas Hardy, John Constable and William Henry Hudson all feature Salisbury Plain in their work.
The album ' On Salisbury Plain' has works entitled 'At Imber', 'Orchids on Cheverell Hill',' On Haxton Down', 'Dust Devil' and 'Briza media' - illustrative of the natural environment of the Plain.
